Each time you open the valve, air reaches this foam, which in turn sucks in air and thus inflates the entire mat. As soon as the mat stops sucking in air on its own, you can continue the inflation process with your mouth and blow until you reach the desired degree of firmness. Finally, the valve closes and the mat can be used. To suck out the air, simply open the valve again and press the mat while twisting. The pressure will force the air out of the mat. As soon as all the air has been released, the valve closes and the mat is rolled up.
